History, Health, and Home
45th Annual Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction

Venice  Art Walk Gallery, Venice, CA

https://venicefamilyclinic.org/annual-events/aw24/

For 45 years, Venice Family Clinic has celebrated the artists and collectors whose talent and generosity raises money for vital health care in our community. This milestone edition of Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction explores the intersection of History, Health and Home. We reflect on the growth of the Clinic and of the Los Angeles art scene and recognize the critical role that building community and a sense of home plays in our well-being: physically, mentally and creatively.

The exhibition gives us a moment to celebrate an enormous breadth of Los Angeles-based talent – from the iconic founders of Venice Art Walk to the longstanding creatives who have carried the torch and those building the city’s artistic future. We are proud to feature a range of established, mid-career and emerging artists.

Proceeds from art sales fund Venice Family Clinic’s innovative and comprehensive programs and services which help the most vulnerable members of our community get and stay healthy.

Politics and the Artist Statement

Langley Hall @ Calarts, Valencia CA - 6pm
Writing Center Workshop

Hosted by the CalArts Writing Center and led by malavika rao, CalArts alum (MFA, Art ‘23) and former Writing Center tutor, this workshop explores the process and strategies for voicing solidarity and political advocacy in the context of individual and collective artist statements. The goal of the workshop is to identify principles and strategies of effective writing that can guide artists when they choose to speak up about difficult and urgent social and political issues.

By looking at a range of recent examples of political artist statements, we will explore the following questions: how do we translate our political convictions clearly and succinctly into words? How do we ensure the message is meaningful and addressed to the specific context of the art work and the exhibition space? How do we assess and navigate the risk of censorship for such statements, and why might we speak even when reprisal is all but certain? malavika will share her experience, along with a group of students from her cohort, of writing both collective and individual statements of solidarity with Palestine that were then singled out for exclusion from the MFA post-graduate show at UTA gallery in January 2024.

malavika rao is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, ceramics, fiber, and installation. Her practice explores generational trauma and healing.  She uses the knowledge of craft to articulate resistance to dominant familial and societal structures by constructing portals to the past and imagining alternative narratives for the future. Utilizing traditional art and craft-forms, inherited materials, connections to ancestors, and time travel, malavika aims to build new worlds at the intersections of pasts and futures for herself and her community, in the hopes that these worlds can become powerful realms of healing, resistance, and liberation.
